We present an adaptive numerical scheme for computing the nonlinear partial differential equations arising in 3D imagemultiscale analysis. The scheme is based on a semiimplicit scale discretization and on an adaptive finite element method in 3D-space. Successive coarsening of the computational grid is used for increasing the efficiency of the numerical procedure. L∞-stability of the semi-discrete scheme is proved and computational results related to 3D nonlinear image filtering are discussed. © 2001 Springer-Verlag.
