The simulation of powder bed based additive manufacturing processes is a computational expensive task, due to different time and length scales, highly nonlinear material behaviour and dynamic growth of the simulation domain. Hence, conventional Finite Element based simulation tools may lead to very large scale systems. Therefore techniques are desired that decrease the computational cost. One approach is given by model reduction. The Finite Element space is characterized by locally supported ansatz functions and may be of high dimension, i.e. a large number of unknowns have to be determined. Computed quantities such as the temperature field corresponding to certain parameters, e.g. laser power, often lie in a lower dimensional subspace. This possibly truncated subspace, represented by a basis with global ansatz functions, may then be used to solve problems for similar parameters with a lower number of unknowns. In the present contribution projection based reduced-order modelling is applied to decrease the computational effort of the three dimensional simulation of selective laser melting of PA12 at a macroscopic level, focusing on the thermal problem. The Proper Orthogonal Decomposition is used to compute appropriate bases along with so-called hyper-reduction techniques, leading to a considerable reduction of computational cost.
