We simulate electron emission from a sharp tungsten tip induced by sub-8fs laser pulses and compare DC field and laser power dependence of the emission with experimental results. The simulation shows that with the correct choice of carrier-envelope phase of the exciting laser pulse, a single 700 attosecond electron pulse can be generated. We also discuss the applicability of such a system as a carrier-envelope phase detector. © 2007 Springer-Verlag.
