Abstract
In German, certain uninflected elements (such as allerdings, wiederum, also, nun, nämlich, beispielsweise) can occur in the “post initial position” between a prefield constituent and the finite verb. These elements behave differently from focus particles. They are a dverbial connectors which, alongside their relational function, in this – and only this – position take on the information-structural task of marking a change of topic. Only a small class of scaling units – elements typically neglected in focus particle research (zumindest, höchstens, wenigstens, etc.) – can mark either topic or focus here. With its specific correlation of form and function, the post initial position of adverb connectors represents a compositionally not completely analysable construction in terms of construction grammar.
