Abstract

This article attempts to demonstrate that some of the textbooks used for the teaching of English at German schools suffer from the fact that they provide grammatical descriptions that are not in line with those provided by the established English reference grammars (such as the Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language and the Cambridge Grammar of the English Language). Furthermore, the presentation of vocabulary in the vocabulary parts is criticized.

In the light of recent developments in cognitive linguistics and construction grammar an outline of a paedagogical construction grammar is made.
