Abstract

The author endeavors to show how cyber-physical systems (CPS) can contribute to more sustainability. The history of sustainability, which dates back more than 40 years, illustrates that the concept of sustainability is built up not only on three pillars (economy, ecology, and society) but consists of at least five more descriptors (anthropocentrism, nature conservation, equity, comprehensiveness, and long-term durability). CPS as a part of ICT is a new discipline and refers to the linkage of the digital and the physical world, announcing the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution. CPS can lead to more energy and resource efficiency as shown for the two fundamental areas of sustainability (agriculture and energy). An increasing world population with a rising demand on world resources could profit from an adequate integration of CPS solutions in business processes.
