Abstract

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) coatings on 316Lstainless steel plates has been demonstrated. Deposition time, suspension concentration, difference of potential and distance between electrodes are the main parameters influencing EPD. These parameters were varied in wide ranges and their influences on deposition was examined to optimize the EPD conditions. A PEEK powder and pure ethanol were employed for the suspension preparation. It was observed that with increasing PEEK concentration, the rate of deposition and the thickness of the deposit increased if all other parameters were kept constant. It was also observed that with increasing strength of electric field the thickness of the coating deposited from the same suspension increased and the deposition rate was higher due to higher electrophoretic mobility of the suspended particles. The microstructure and morphology of PEEK coatings were quite reproducible, thus EPD can be considered an effective approach to produce PEEK films on metallic substrates.
