Abstract

Besides offering a wide range of products and low prices, customer satisfaction can be achieved by personalized services and optimized retail environments. Therefore, in the retail business these aspects are seen as crucial success factors. While web shops try to meet customer desires by analyzing internet based profile data, retail stores have to make additional efforts to build up customized services and store setups in a real-world environment. A new approach for detecting and processing person trajectories at the point of sale is introduced. Customer trajectories are visually captured by surveillance cameras and extracted by the Histogram of Oriented Gradients algorithm. Hotspot identification is carried out by applying a modified version of the Popular Regions algorithm. Hotspots and single movements of customers between them are used for customer behavior analysis based on Markov Models. The presented approach is illustrated using data derived from a sample scenario. As a result four regions of interest as well as a main path between three of them are extracted. © 2011 IADIS.
