Digitalis lanata cell suspension cultures are not able to synthesize cardiac glycosides de novo but can be used to modify exogenous ones. Among the conversion reactions observed, the regio- and stereospecific 12β-hydroxylation of digitoxin derivatives to their respective digoxin derivatives is of special interest (1). In recent years, research carried out by Reinhard and co-workers focussed on a process in which β-methyldigitoxin was used as the substrate for 12β-hydroxylation. The product, β-methyldigoxin, appeared in the spent medium where levels of 500–700 mg dm−3 could be reached. A semi-continuous process for the production of β-methyldigoxin was devised and run successfully in a 300 dm3 airlift bioreactor (2).
