Geometric deviations are observable on every manufactured part and can have huge influences on the functional behaviour of technical products. Therefore, allowable limits for these imperfections have to be specified and set during product development. However, this task is quite difficult since geometric deviations affect the product behaviour in various ways. Thus, current approaches try to incorporate the whole workpiece geometry in tolerance activities instead of reducing the functional behaviour by expressing it as vector chains. In this context, the virtual assessment of geometric deviations is an important step in geometry-based computer aided tolerancing. This contribution illustrates the methodology as well as some applications of virtual tolerance assessment and highlights the possibilities and advantages of geometry-based tolerancing.
