Project details

Short description

The aim of the project is to investigate the late antique religious complex of Sv. Andreji in Betiga in order to trace the development of the building over the centuries and to verify its dedication to the Apostle Andrew.

During the two excavation campaigns, the excavation area will first be cleaned to make the walls and mosaics clearly visible. Then, the exposed areas will be recorded and a thorough analysis of the masonry, floor mosaics and inscriptions preserved in situ will be carried out. Finally, a careful examination of the furnishings (architectural sculpture and ornamentation) will take place, which are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Pula.

The use of modern archaeological techniques (laser scanners, drone photography, 3D models and reconstruction of the building, etc.) and architectural ornamentation analyses will enable a detailed examination of each individual room in the complex. Particular attention will be paid to the examination of the triconch in order to compare its function with similar structures in the immediate vicinity.

The project envisages collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of Pula and the Faculty of Engineering in Pisa for the execution of the surveys.
