Scientific Abstract

Novel observations and process modelling of globally significant cold spots

Monitoring inland ice is crucial for understanding cold-region processes and predicting climate-driven changes and hazards. The EU-funded CryoSCOPE brings together a consortium of experts in inland ice-related fields, including leading global research organisations and industry partners. The project addresses challenges linked to evolving land ice, snow and permafrost through advanced in situ and remote sensing of the atmosphere, aerosols, cryosphere and hydrology. Utilising state-of-the-art modelling techniques – such as Earth system models, glacier dynamics, hydrological processes, atmospheric drivers and land surface modelling – and cutting-edge AI data analysis, CryoSCOPE delivers innovative solutions. These insights will advance environmental research, support informed decision-making, promote meaningful engagement with end-users, contribute to effective adaptation and mitigation strategies and strengthening climate resilience around the cold spots.
