The overarching objective of the proposed research project is to simulate the macroscopically visible material response of soft, light-responsive polymers under UV-light irradiation. We focus on materials that contain photo-sensitive switching molecules, such as azobenzene. The project is divided into two work packages. In work package 1 we aim to employ a continuum modeling framework to replicate various complexities of the material response. This will include dynamic processes both of the polymeric matrix and the switching molecules. Moreover, we will take into account dissipative effects such as light scattering. These effects will be implemented into a finite-element code using the open source finite-element library DEAL II. In work package 2 we aim to validate the derived modeling approach with the results of experimental investigations. To this end we will use a recently published fabrication and testing procedure of photo-sensitive materials and further extend on it by investigating different variations of the experimental setup, polymers and azobenzene derivatives. Moreover, we will perform infrared reflection spectroscopy in order to gain additional knowledge on the underlying material behavior on the molecular scale.
