Soil aquifer treatment (SAT) is a type of managed aquifer recharge in which water infiltrates
through a deep vadose zone into the aquifer and can be applied to improve the quality of
reclaimed water. Engineered Injection and Extraction (EIE) is a remediation technique consisting
of injecting and extracting water with a specified sequence in order to enhance mixing processes
in the subsurface, such as the mixing between a treatment solution and a contaminant. In this
project, we propose to combine soil aquifer treatment with EIE to enhance mixing processes in
the unsaturated and saturated zone and thus increase the effectiveness of natural attenuation
and consequently improve groundwater quality. The analysis will be done through experimental
work at the laboratory scale and numerical modeling, and it will be complemented with field-scale
model scenarios.
