The objective of this project is the establishment of a process for the production of plate-like particles by deformation of ductile spherical particles in a stirred media mill. Extensive studies are performed to identify the key process parameters influencing the particle shape. The deformed particles are characterized regarding size and shape distribution by traditional SEM image analysis as well as by single particle counting using a flow cytometer. Our investigations include metal, polymer and glass particles. The project consists of four work packages:
A) In-situ SEM-manipulations to study the deformation behaviour of single spherical model particles.
B) Characterization of the particle shape by flow cytometry.
C) Transition from spherical to plate-like particle shape in a stirred media mill.
D) Preparation, characterization and processing of glass materials with complex composition.
