Subproject III investigates the technology requirements, achievable performance and integration into the LOHC system network for the (re)conversion of hydrogen into electricity using thermal machines.
The three most important thermal machines in power engineering - gas turbines
(TP III.1.1), reciprocating piston engines (TP III.1.2) and steam power processes (TP III.1.3) are investigated. For all three plant types, the thermal integration of the machines into the overall system is decisive for the achievable efficiencies. System efficiency benefits significantly from the use of waste heat of thermal processes, but also sets limits in the optimization of thermal machines, so that sufficient thermal energy is available for dehydration. In the optimized case the heat demand of the dehydrogenation of the LOHC Marlotherm exceeds the available waste heat of both
turbine than to a lesser extent the engine. Specifically for the three thermal power processes the machines for hydrogen operation and the special requirements identified in the project network boundary conditions of the LOHC technology are considered.
