Abstract

The micropaleontology (algae, foraminifers and some problematic organisms) of carbonate beds intercalated with dolomites at the upper portion of Shotori Formation of Kuhe-e Nayband (Tabas area, east-central Iran) is described based on 36 thin sections. The dasycladacean algal association is represented mainly by abundant Poikiloporella duplicata (Pia) and Clypeina besici Pantie. Spherical microfossils associated with dasycladaceans are described and their systematic position as gametophores (reproduction organs of algae) or embryos of invertebrate organisms is discussed. They are here interpreted as dasycladacean gametophores. The microfacies of the carbonate beds is described briefly. Based on field observations and on the microfacies analysis, the intercalated carbonate beds, and conseq uendy the Shotori dolomite, are considered to have been deposited in a shallow water (subtidal, shallow lagoon), partially in intertidal, environment. Based on the association of Poikiloporella duplicata (Pia) and Clypeina besici Pantic, the carbonate beds, exposed at the upper portion of the Shotori dolomite in Kuh-e Nayband, are assigned to the Carnian.
