Both random and systematic deviations of manufactured parts as well as variation in manufacturing processes may have significant effects on the kinematic behavior of a mechanism. Hence, the product developer has to define both appropriate tolerances of the single parts and appropriate precision requirements of the manufacturing processes to ensure the mechanism’s functionality while causing low manufacturing costs. This paper presents an approach on the statistical tolerance-cost-optimization of a time-dependent system taking into account random and systematic deviations as well as the imprecision of corresponding manufacturing processes. The practical use of the approach is shown in a case study of a non-ideal cross-arm window regulator.
