Digital children’s books can be described as a kind of “new” and - independent - media. Quintessence of this thesis is the classification of electronic children’s books in the spectrum of media usage of toddlers and adolescents. Analogies to other media like printed children’s books, audio dramas or computer games are given. As an independent media they can be interpreted in the tradition of game storys. Like them they are mostly constituted through a narrative process, but integrate digital prospects in any kind of playful elements. When classified in the media usage of toddlers and adolescents, many connecting factors of electronic children’s books can be found, which show the potential of this new media for the media usage of children and their evolution. Based on the three above-named media formats the sectors “reading socalisation and motivation”, “media literacy”, “childlike gaming” and the “evolution of moral and value concepts” can be constituted as significant. By an analysis of three showcases in this thesis will fostering possibilities and thinkable challenges of the usage of digital children’s books be shown in detail. The monograph is based on the ‘neoformalistic’ computer game analysis by Fromme and Könitz (2014), which is transfered to the specific mediumship of enhanced e-books. These showcases illustrate, how entirely different the design of this media can be. Especially the focus on content and design shows the implication for the different forstering possibilties. This thesis presents in an wide prospect a plurality of sectors, which are relevant for enhanced e-books as a media. Based on this comprehensive description of this exemperimental field new quality criteria will be expressed in a retrospective consideration. They point out the development advancement issues of electronic children’s books and give recommondations for the mediaspecific usage.
