The article regards hospitality as condition humana and, not least from a systemic perspective, inquires what constitutes hospitality, what function it performs for certain relational systems and how the two relation forms friendship and hospitality are related. Responses to these questions are advanced (a) in connection with categorial tensions like selfhood/otherhood, proximity/distance and regulated/open and (b) via interpretation of real-life instances of hospitality like pupil exchanges, Erasmus, au pairs and foster families. Finally, the authors discuss a number of commonalities and differences between friendship and hospitality.
