Abstract

A mechanistic study: In a Brønsted acid/base reaction, gaseous triflic acid (OTfH) transfers its proton to the basic Cl anion of the ionic liquid [CCIm]Cl forming volatile HCl and the IL [CCIm][TfO]. This anion exchange reaction is monitored in the near-surface region quantitatively by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as a function of time (see picture; BE=binding energy).
