Abstract

After the first invention of bioactive silicate glass (BG) (45S5- 46.1SiO2, 24.4Na2O, 26.9CaO and 2.6P2O5 (mol%)) by Larry Hench in at the University of Florida in 1969 (Hench et al. 1971), there has been great interest to develop new BGs and in this perspective in 2004 (Yan et. al. 2004)produced the first MBG with the combination of sol-gel and surfactant templating methods. There is a general trend to modify the properties of MBGs with some of the well-known therapeutical ions (Hoppe, Güldal, and Boccaccini 2011)(Hoppe and Boccaccini 2015)(Mourino, Cattalini, and Boccaccini 2012). Substitution of small amounts of oxides, can improve the osteogenesis, antibacterial capacity, angiogenesis or cementogenesis (Chengtie Wu and Chang 2014)(C. Wu and Chang 2012)(Chengtie Wu et al. 2011)properties of these MBGs. In this study, a new family of MBGs doped with several biologically active ions (Ag, Cu, Ce and Zn) has been synthesized via sol-gel technique in combination with surfactant-templating and evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) processes. SEM, EDS, FTIR and XRD analyses were performed to characterize the obtained MBGs, in terms of their morphological structure and degradation behavior in simulated body fluid- SBF. Undoped and doped MBGs were compared in terms of their bioactivity responses. Results proved that all of the MBGs showed good bioactivity responses with the formation of hydroxyapatite (HAP) phase, which can further enable them to be used in bone tissue applications.
