Abstract

Digital TV signals being transmitted over error-prone channels often suffer from lost macro blocks or slices. In literature, a wide range of approaches for error concealment is described exploiting spatial and/or temporal references. In 2008, we introduced a new paradigm for error concealment utilizing several representations of a particular TV signal which are avail-able in multi-broadcast-reception scenarios. This inter-sequence error concealment provides supreme reconstruction quality in case of low compression of the reference signals outperforming state-of-the-art techniques by up to 15 dB PSNRY. However, inter-sequence error concealment may fail if the reference signals are characterized by degraded image quality. In this paper, we propose a combination of temporal error concealment approaches and inter-sequence error concealment which can cope with this drawback. Joint temporal and inter-sequence error concealment outnumbers inter-sequence error concealment by up to 5.8 dB PSNRY on average. A peak gain of up to 14.9 dB PSNRY can be achieved. Finally, the proposed algorithm can also cope with lost parts of the reference signals in practical application scenarios.
