Abstract

Out of all Al alloys, Laser Beam Melting in Powder
Bed (LBM) is almost exclusively used to process Al-Si cast
alloys today. Feasibility of LBM of high-performance Al-Cu
wrought alloys was published previously by the authors.
Prealloyed powders are used for LBM. Small amounts or less
common application-specific alloys must be atomized on
request which is expensive, time consuming and of varying
quality. Instead, during LBM alloys might form from mixtures
of few basic powders. If density differs strongly as e. g. with Al
and Cu, powders de-mix uncontrollably due to gravity. In
LBM, spherical inert gas atomized powders are used. Cheaper
non-spherical air atomized Al powders deposit insufficiently
homogeneous in thin powder layers. LBM of Metal Matrix
Composites (MMC) was shown using mechanical alloying that
was time-consuming, affected particle size and shape.
The goal of this contribution is to investigate the feasibility of
an approach towards larger freedom of choice in LBM
regarding all aforementioned dimensions of alloy composition,
MMC creation and non-spherical base powders. Metal
nanoparticles (np) were dry coated onto air atomized Al alloy
micro particles. Powders with adhering np and LBM products
were analyzed and compared to previous results.
