Abstract

One of the most common injuries, not only in work-related environments, are hand injuries. In many cases, those are treated by rigid connections of parts or the entire wrist to alleviate the symptoms. This can cause a high limitation of workability and quality of life. Despite all scientific efforts, the biomechanics of the wrist with its complex support structure are still not entirely understood. Frequent injury patterns which lead to painful, arthritic changes and restrictions of the range of motion, cause problems in clinical practice. Often the currently used surgical techniques for reconstructing damaged structures only reach limited success. Additionally the diagnosis and the treatment of many injuries are vague and difficult. For example the functions and interactions of the hand structures are not completely clarified, whether a surgery is useful or not. This problem can only be solved with collaboration of engineering and medical expertise.
The main goal of this contribution is to create a simulation model of the hand in order to facilitate a realistic representation and analysis of the interaction between the bones. Thereby future injuries could be better understood, diagnosed and treated.
To sum up, a validated 3D hand model focusing on the wrist offers a vast number of possibilities in clinical practice as well as in basic research, such as the detailed exploration of the functional relationships in the wrist. Furthermore there is a positive influence on socio-economic factors, because earlier diagnosis and individualized therapies can minimize the duration of disability and also avoid occupational disability.
When developing product and process innovations, the human ever more moves into the center of consideration. In fact, the available human hand models are not detailed enough, for example to describe realistic grasping motions, which are crucial for manual assembly tasks as well as for most user-product interactions. Beside clinical practices, the developed bone and ligament-guided model should also be used in system simulations to adjust work processes and products to compy with the biomechanical requirements of workers or users. Thus, congestion can be uncovered and avoided in early planning stages.
