Abstract

The physical description of the energy balance of a building leads to a system of coupled differential or difference equations. It can be written in a unifying form using state space techniques, known from control theory. Depending on the level of detail of the building description and on the chosen physical and mathematical models, the resulting system of equations may be of a high degree. Model reduction techniques attempt to simulate the system performance with a reduced set of equations without deteriorating the quality of the simulation results significantly. This enables a computer simulation with reduced numerical expense. After a short introduction into the theory of model reduction by balanced state space realisation, it will be shown how this method is successfully applied to the energy simulation of buildings.
