Abstract

Metal-doped hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a‑C:H:Me) coatings are widely used in industrial applications owing to low friction and high wear resistance. In higher loaded applications like forming processes, especially tungsten-modified hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a‑C:H:W) coatings have proven their worth. Interestingly, several experimental studies have shown that modification of the coating architecture, such as multilayered structures, can result in further advantageous coating properties. In the present study, approximately 2 µm thin a‑C:H:W multilayer coatings were deposited in a combined PVD/PACVD coating process. Alternating soft and hard a‑C:H:W layers were generated by means of alternating bias voltage. The bias voltage and the deposition time or the number of layers for the alternating layers, respectively, were varied according to an experimental Box-Behnken design, allowing a systematic and statistical evaluation of the relationship between deposition parameters and coating properties. Coatings’ characterization revealed significant influences of the bias voltages on the coatings’ mechanical properties and tribological behavior whereas the deposition time showed only minor effects. Moreover, a special type of multilayered structure was generated inspired by the internal structure of a marine sponge’s anchor spicule. This variant showed promising mechanical and tribological properties accentuating its use in applications with higher loads.
