Abstract

In this paper, we investigate a real-world system for personalized audio rendering, whose purpose is to simultaneously synthesize different acoustic scenes in different areas of a reproduction room. The implemented system is based on a pressure matching approach, which aims at minimizing the mean squared error between the desired and reproduced sound pressure at a predefined set of control points. More precisely, a certain sound pressure distribution (e.g., as generated by a plane wave) shall be synthesized in a particular local listening area, whereas the sound pressure in the remaining areas of interest shall ideally be zero such that multiple acoustics scenes can be independently synthesized. Motivated by the Kirchhoff–Helmholtz integral equation, the virtual control points are placed on circular contours around the individual local listening areas. The reproduction system is installed in a reverberant, but acoustically controlled environment and, for evaluation, the synthesized sound field is sensed at a multitude of positions within each of the local listening areas. Thereby, the reproduction performance of the real system can be compared to that of a previously simulated system assuming ideal conditions. In particular, the impact of reverberation on the one hand, and the impact of the radiation characteristics of real loudspeakers together with positioning errors on the other hand, are of special interest and assessed separately.
