Abstract

The current state of the art in Additive manufacturing Aluminium alloys represents processing Aluminium cast alloys such as AlSi10Mg and AlSi12. These alloys are easily weldable and castable, but do not provide the high strength characteristics essential for certain industrial applications. The current paper is therefore motivated by the need to develop new high strength Al alloy material systems that can be processed using a low power Laser Beam Melting (LBM) machine system. In addition to their high strength characteristics, Aluminium wrought alloys such as EN AW-6061 and EN AW-6082 also show high corrosion resistance. With applications in Automotive, ship building and aerospace industry, processing of these alloys with an additive manufacturing technology is a significant requirement for the advancement of the technology. The presented paper therefore examines the potential of Additive fabrication of alloys EN AW 6061 and EN AW 6082 using the Laser Beam Melting process in powder bed. A step by step experimental approach of analysing single weld tracks, thin wall structures, 3D cubes without the support structure and finally 3D cubes on support structure is undertaken in order to qualify these materials. The paper critically examines the various experimental stages undertaken in order to fabricate 3D structures with a relative density above 99%. A SLM 50, LBM machine system from Realizer GmbH is used for conducting the experimental work. Further characterization of the fabricated structures is done in order to validate the fabricated structures.
