Abstract

Process analysis based on high speed camera observations offers valuable information about the dynamics in laser beam welding. However, conventional imaging with a single camera only enables the analysis of two-dimensional projections of the process dynamics. To overcome this limitation, a stereoscopic camera setup is used to observe the welding process. The three-dimensional position of point-shaped structures like welding spatter and tungsten tracer particles brought into the vapor capillary is calculated with a stereo algorithm. With this method the movement of both spatter and tracers can be determined with high accuracy.

The stereoscopically measured three-dimensional trajectories of welding spatter allow the identification of spatter characteristics like spatter velocity and ejection direction. Furthermore, the impact position of each spatter particle can be estimated.

By means of reconstructed three-dimensional trajectories of tracer particles in the vapor capillary, information about the dynamics of the capillary is obtained. For example, the inclination angle of the capillary can be estimated with this method.

The presented method of stereoscopic process observation allows the generation of additional information which is not available with conventional single camera setups and will in the future allow for more accurate investigations of laser beam welding and may also be used to analyze other welding processes.
