Abstract

Compliant systems are a peculiar class of mechanical systems designed to produce controllable large deformations by exploiting structural flexibility. They can be seen as a blend between structures (elastically deformable, but only up to a limited extent) andmechanisms (large deformations, but produced by means of localized sliding elements like bearings and hinges and not by elastic deformations). In close collaboration with industrial partners Empa is investigating compliant solutions for products of several industrial sectors (e.g. surgery instrumentation, sport articles, eye glasses and prostheses).
