Abstract

Gas to liquids (GTL) is a rapidly emerging technology that converts natural gas into premium liquid hydrocarbons, such as high-quality diesel fuels and lubricant base oils. GTL facilities are now in progress or being considered in gas-rich countries such as Algeria, Australia, Colombia, Iran, Nigeria, Qatar and Russia. In this review, the status of the development of commercial projects aiming at the production of synthetic fuels from natural gas is summarized. Moreover, the progress in conversion of biomass to liquids is discussed with particular emphasis on the situation in Germany. A large number of commercial GTL projects are being developed in Qatar, utilizing natural gas from the North field, which has reserves of about 900-10 ft. It is expected that a capacity of about 15-10 t/a will be in place by 2015. Most companies have developed GTL processes that rely on auto-thermal reforming for syngas production and use a slurry phase bubble column reactor with a cobalt-based catalyst for the Fischer-Tropsch reaction. Due to intense mixing and turbulent flow in the reactor, the SBCR technology enables very high heat transfer allowing control of the highly exothermic FT reaction. Thus, a high degree of syngas conversion and high selectivity are achieved. Upgrading of the waxy syncrude involves typically hydrocracking and isomerization employing existing technologies. © 2007 URBAN-VERLAG Hamburg/Wien GmbH.
