Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present experimental and numerical investigations performed for the case of the flow around a square cylinder mounted on a wall. Our numerical scheme is based on a finite element (FE) formulation of Lighthill's analogy for the computation of flow induced noise. The flow is computed by a CFD code using the finite volume method (FVM) and the inhomogeneous wave equation according to Lighthill's analogy is solved by applying a finite element method (FEM). Our formulation allows for the flow as well as for the acoustic computation an independent and, for each physical field, optimal discretization. The scheme offers the possibility of a direct coupling in time domain as well as a sequential coupling in frequency domain. Correlation measurements are carried out in a low noise windtunnel for the pressure fluctuations on the wall, velocity characteristics of the flow and the recorded far field acoustic pressures. Finally, the measured and simulated results for the flow as well as for the acoustic field are discussed.
