When metal materials are formed, the friction phenomena influence the material flow, the surface quality of the manufactured parts and the wear on the tools. While most FEM programs already provide the necessary routines for the location-dependent description of the friction, the methods and measuring equipment for experimentally determining the required input data are still missing on the experimental side. The development and testing of a measuring device for examining the processes in the active joint between the tool and the workpiece, summarized under the term active surface friction, was the task and subject of this research work. The heart of the measuring device is a newly developed compression test. It allows the investigation of all influencing factors that determine the friction behavior even in more complex processes: the true contact surface, the normal stress, the relative displacement between workpiece and tool and the surface enlargement. The normal stress and the glide path can be set independently of each other. An ultrasonic measuring method was developed for in situ measurement of the true contact area. It can be used for the examination of all material pairings that occur in metal forming technology and enables a high lateral resolution due to the strong focus of the sound beam. However, the application of lubricants is limited to liquid lubricants.
