Abstract

The aim of the investigations of this work was to improve the process efficiency in laser beam ablation for the production of molds and dies by progress in process control. Three strategies were offered to solve this task. The two removal mechanisms, oxide chips and melt removal, had to be qualified separately, or coordinated efficiently in a two-stage process. Based on the qualitative modeling of the interaction mechanisms of the sub-processes oxide chipping and melt removal, technological improvements were theoretically developed and verified in the course of this process development. For the melt removal, the feasibility of the required technological targets was demonstrated using an in-house developed removal nozzle as well as the demonstration of completely new possibilities for increasing efficiency. Accordingly, the resonant excitation by means of focus position oscillation during melt removal, in addition to a clear process stabilization, causes the defined and reproducible structuring of the workpiece surface. From this, on the one hand, the need for further basic scientific investigations (Nonlinear Dynamics) and, on the other hand, the technological potential in tribological structuring applications can be derived.
