The application of functional ceramic coatings on complexly shaped surfaces as well as the generation of functional surface structures is often problematic for conventional coating techniques. A solution to this difficulty is promised by a novel technology which uses the ceramization (pyrolysis) of polymer precursors via laser radiation for generating layers. This book discusses the fundamental mechanisms of laser induced pyrolsis of preceramic polymers. lt gives an overview over the producible layer morphologies and layer structures and displays the possibility of the selective application of definite surface structures as well as of the functionalization of the coatings.
