Abstract

Growing environmental awareness and the steady rise in vehicle numbers are key challenges for the automotive industry to develop new car concepts. Hot stamping is an established manufacturing process for ensuring occupant safety while reducing the component weight. Compared with conventional forming processes, the tools are subject to massive wear due to the high thermo-mechanical stresses. In order to ensure consistent component quality and reduce maintenance, a suitable wear protection of the tools is required. In this work, two approaches were investigated to increase the wear resistance of hot stamping tools. For this purpose, a laser alloying process and surface coatings were used. The focus of the investigation was on deriving the influence of different alloying elements and element concentrations on the wear behavior. Another essential part of this work was the development of a suitable evaluation methodology in order to determine the wear volume, which enables an evaluation of the different modified surfaces regarding their wear tendency. In the final step, the surface modification was transferred to simple component geometries to ensure its applicability to the hot stamping process.
