The numerical simulation of heat treatment processes is becoming increasingly important in the design of large and complex bearing components. Since the required thermophysical and thermomechanical material properties depend strongly on the microstructural composition of the material, a precise description of the phase transformation behavior is of crucial importance for the accuracy of the heat treatment simulation. Against this background, the overall objective of this work is to generate a more detailed understanding of the factors influencing the phase transformation of through hardening bearing steels and to develop a methodology for simplified determination and exact mathematical mapping of the transformation behavior for the FE simulation of heat treatment processes.
The knowledge gained in this work enables a more efficient approach to the simulation of heat treatment processes, as the time and effort for characterizing new material batches as well as known materials with different austenitizing conditions is considerably reduced. In addition, the quality of the simulation results is significantly improved by the more accurate mapping of the transformation behavior.
