In recent years, the cyclic deformation and fatigue behaviours of different model and commercial ultrafine-grained (UFG) metals prepared by severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques have been studied. The present contribution is based largely on the authors’ recent work on fatigued UFG high-purity copper, commercial purity Al, the age-hardenable aluminium alloy AA6061 and α-brass, all prepared by ECAP (equal channel angular pressing). Emphasis is laid on the microstructural mechanisms governing cyclic microplasticity, cyclic deformation, the cyclic stress-strain (CSS) response, as displayed in the CSS-curve, fatigue damage and fatigue life. The roles of fatigue strength, fatigue ductility and microstructural stability of UFG materials in controlling fatigue life in high-cycle and in low-cycle fatigue will be discussed
