Im letzten Jahrzehnt hat sich eine Variante der Wissenssoziologie entwickelt, die
sich grundlegend am Begriff des Gedächtnisses orientiert und damit insbesondere zeitliche Bezüge in
sozialen Prozessen in den Fokus rückt. Mit der Weiterentwicklung des gedächtnissoziologischen Ansat-
zes stellt sich die Frage nach seinem gesellschaftstheoretischen Potenzial. Der Text lotet diese Perspek-
tive aus. In einem ersten Schritt wird die prozessorientierte Gedächtnissoziologie kurz skizziert. Danach
erfolgt eine erste Einordnung dieses Ansatzes entlang der Unterscheidung Sozialtheorie/Gesellschafts-
theorie. Drittens werden einige Probleme des Gesellschaftsbegriffs erörtert und damit eine Grundlage
für die Diskussion der gesellschaftstheoretischen Perspektiven geschaffen, die im vierten Schritt entwi-
ckelt werden. Neben der grundsätzlichen Leistung der Temporalisierung, die ein derartiger prozessori-
entierter Ansatz ermöglicht, werden insbesondere die Erfassung von Antagonismen und Konflikten
und die Konzeptualisierung gesellschaftlichen Wandels bzw. gesellschaftlicher Transformationen skiz-
ziert.
In the last decade a variant of the sociology of knowledge has developed which is fundamen-
tally oriented towards the concept of memory and thus focuses in particular on temporal references in
social processes. With the further development of the sociological approach to memory, the question of
its social theoretical potential arises. The text explores this perspective.
In a first step, the process-oriented sociology of memory is briefly outlined. Then a first classification of
this approach along the German distinction between Sozialtheorie und Gesellschaftstheorie is given.
Thirdly, some problems of the concept of society are discussed, thus creating a basis for the discussion
of the social-theoretical perspectives that will be developed in the fourth step.
In addition to the fundamental achievement of temporalization, which such a process-oriented ap-
proach makes possible, in particular the recording of antagonisms and conflicts and the conceptualiza-
tion of social change or social transformations are outlined.
