Rolling bearings under oscillating motion are used in a wide range of applications. However, there are no validated calculation methods for calculating the rating life for this application. Instead, the oscillating motions are usually converted into continuous revolutions and then designed according to DIN ISO 281 or DIN 26281. Alternatively, one of the existing, but not validated, calculation approaches for non-continuous revolutions can be used. However, especially for small oscillations, it is unclear to what extent these calculation approaches are valid at all, since wear can occur here as a failure mechanism instead of fatigue. The aim of this paper is therefore to provide an understanding of possible failure mechanisms in oil-lubricated rolling bearings under small oscillating motions. For this purpose, several life tests are carried out and evaluated with a new type of rolling bearing oscillation test rig.
