Abstract

Image retrieval is a common technique to find similar images in a dataset given a query image. Given such an image, this can for example be used to find images showing similar pathologies and in this way speed up the medical decision process. This chapter gives an introduction into the field of image retrieval. At first,methods to form a global representation given local descriptors in an image are presented. Those methods are then related to deep-learning-based methods. Eventually, basic techniques to speed up the querying using hashing are outlined.
