Abstract

To tackle future power system challenges, the concept of grid-forming (GFM) inverter technology has emerged. Several GFM concepts are under research and display their characteristic behavior to meet the system's needs. An emerging concept called the 'Phase Restoring Principle' (PRP) with its active power control extension is described in this work. This non-linear control concept displays equivalent behavior to a slack (in frequency only), providing an ideal response to the power system under disturbance and avoiding the runaway effects produced by a phase-locked loop. Well-known Droop and Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM)- based GFM schemes are considered for comparison. Each control methodology is implemented in the IEEE 9-bus test system in the electromagnetic transient domain to highlight their characteristics response in a network with a high proliferation of renewables. Each control approach provides inertia support and ensures stability under disturbance. The similarities between Droop- and VSM-based controls are witnessed. With its reduced order, PRP displays its key feature of prioritizing response to disturbance over set point changes and returning the system to nominal frequency with tuned parameters.
