Abstract

Dokuchaev first introduced formally the concept of factors of soil formation, which act and interact at different spatial and temporal scales. This chapter provides an overview of these factors, which is followed by chapters on most of the specific factors. Climate has a major effect on soil formation because it affects the weathering of rocks and the mineral soil, and vegetation and organisms, which play a major role in changing rocks and sediments to soil. Parent material underpins soil particle-size distribution, chemistry and physics. Relief affects soil hydrology and human use of the soil. Finally, human influence on soil formation has now been recognized as a factor.
