Abstract

Subjectivity impacts the practice of open innovation: It can play the role of a need or a barrier in co-creation. Balancing subjective views to intersubjectivity can be seen as basis for efficient innovation processes. Our explorative interview study contributes to a comprehensive explanation of intersubjectivity and critical distance from one's own creation, as well as to practical balancing strategies in open innovation.

The identified critical turning point between positive and negative effects of subjectivity is to create for oneself or for others. This comes with challenges: subjectivity gives co-creators resilience, but can be a barrier; the need for critical distance changes with stages of the innovation process; intersubjectivity may not be learnable at all. Therefore, practitioners are recommended to select and involve co- creators with a consideration of intersubjectivity skills.

Data revealed balancing methods and approaches to deal with negative effects of subjectivity, such as creativity methods, involvement design or external assessment. They may support practitioners to proactively deal with subjectivity when pursuing innovation co-creation.
