Abstract

From the perspective of Vegan Literary Studies, the paper examines contemporary fictional narratives that deal with vegetarianism or veganism as a counter-discourse to dominant meat culture. Consuming meat does not only affirm anthropological difference, but also closely connects to concepts of masculinity, patriarchy and authority (Carol J. Adams, Jacques Derrida). Hospitality and commensality usually assert social identity and order. However, if people who reject eating meat sit at the table, they assume the position of ›killjoys‹ (Sara Ahmed) who thwart a normative happiness and identity order. The analysis of fictional texts by Coetzee, Han Kang and Hein then asks to what extent their protagonists cause ›species trouble‹, contributing to the destabilization of an assumedly clear human-animal divide, whereas the aesthetic form of the narratives problematizes conventionalized identities, practices and positions of appropriation.
