Abstract

In recent years several scientist-practitioner networks and outcome management programs in behavioral health were established in order to improve clinical services in routine practice. In these programs and networks the use of a short but still multidimensional and change-sensitive outcome measure is crucial. In this article, we discuss the development of several short versions of currently widely used measures in German-speaking outpatient centres and mental health hospitals in order to make them more usable for continuous progress assessment (those are the Symptom-Checklist, SCL-90-R; the Inventory of Emotional Distress, EMI; the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems, IIP; and the Questionnaire of Incongruence, INK). Validity, reliability, and change-sensitivity of the short questionnaires were assessed on several datasets and results are reported (a community sample, n = 436; a sample of patients in outpatient psychotherapy, n = 169; and a sample of n = 134 patients in inpatient therapy). The psychometric characteristics as well as the resulting total score of general psychological distress admit the combined use of those instruments for outcomes management in routine care. © Hogrefe Verlag Göttingen 2006.
