Abstract

Avoidance has been established as a central feature in the conceptualization of anxiety disorders, but apparently also plays an important role in depression. The Cognitive-Behavioral Avoidance Scale (Ottenbreit & Dobson, 2004) measures depressive avoidance. The German translation was completed by a sample of 657 subjects (187 outpatients, 376 normal controls, 94 students). The factorial structure was confirmed using CFA. The psychometric properties were very satisfactory with an internal consistency of α = .92 and a retest-reliability of r = .80 (total-scale). Construct validity was demonstrated using AAQ and EMOREG. Depression and avoidance remained correlated when anxiety was controlled, supporting the specificity of depressive avoidance. © 2009 Hogrefe Verlag Göttingen.
