Abstract

The chapter discusses how governance in emerging biotechnologies has been conceptualized to deal with complex technological, ethical, and social questions. The authors explore the challenges in designing governance frameworks generally and for synthetic biology particularly. An understanding of different approaches in governance, their advantages and disadvantages, can help us draw a more precise picture of what is being governed, by whom and how in the field of synthetic biology.
