Abstract

Recent advances in biological therapy in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) and early detection of colitis-associated neoplasia have increased the popularity of molecular endoscopy with visualization of single receptor or molecular target expression and the subsequent initiation of expression tailored therapy. Molecular imaging is an emerging field in the receptor expression within the mucosa on a cellular level rather than on macroscopic changes. Various new technological and molecular probes have been utilized for molecular imaging. These new technologies have found their applications in diagnosis, disease monitoring, and assessment of treatment response in IBD. They may also play a role in the detection of colitis-associated neoplasia.
